16 March, 2026 12:19 PM (1 Mins read)The Delhi High Court, during a special Sunday sitting, sought a detailed explanation from the Delhi Police regarding the detention of ten activists allegedly taken into custody without lawful justification.
A Division Bench comprising Justice Navin Chawla and Justice Ravinder Dudeja heard an urgent petition challenging the alleged illegal detention.
During the proceedings, the Delhi Police informed the Court that the activists had already been released. However, the petitioners disputed this claim and alleged that some of the individuals were subjected to illegal detention and custodial torture.
The petitioners also claimed that one activist remains missing, raising serious concerns regarding unlawful confinement and violation of constitutional rights.
Taking note of the seriousness of the allegations, the Court directed authorities to preserve CCTV footage from relevant police stations and detention areas to ensure that crucial evidence is not destroyed.
The Court emphasized the importance of personal liberty guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution of India, and directed the Delhi Police to file a comprehensive explanation regarding the circumstances of the detention.
The matter will be heard again after the police submit their response.
